An absolutely stonking example of a Pouilly Fume at a very competitive price point, Les Patis is perfectly made and beautifully balanced and I would urge you to snap some up while you can. With a usual RRP of £16.99 this is an absolute bargain and only available at this price due to the French hospitality industry being closed for much of last year.
Pouilly Fume is similar stylistically to Sancerre but from the neighbouring village of Pouilly Sur Loire on the other side of the river. The word fume is in reference to the slight smokiness in the wine imparted by the limestone and flinty clay soils. This is what makes this wine so special, these soils give that signature gun flint character which makes Pouilly Fume stand out against the rest of the worlds Sauvignon Blanc.
Producer Benoit Chauveau have had the winery in their family in the little hamlet of St Andelain for several generations with their property comprising about 17 hectares. They have a huge understanding of the terroir and a vast knowledge of what can be achieved in the central Loire Valley.
Vibrant, fresh and light this is a classic French Sauvignon with masses of flavour and tonnes of minerality. Lemon, gooseberry and lime shine through on the palate with a bright acidity and a long finish.
Goats cheese is a classic pairing here but it is also amazing with oysters, grilled fish with mango salsa or lemon chicken.
