This Valpolicella Classico is made from parts of the Pojega Cru vineyards from the multi award winning Guerrieri Rizzardi producer. The company’s goal is the creation of ‘estate produced and bottled’ wines, retaining control of the entire production chain in-house. New vineyards have been planted with different grape varieties in accordance with the type of soil, and the system of nurturing different varieties of vine is being improved to increase the quality of the wines. Made from a blend of 80% Corvinone & Corvina, 10% Merlot and 10% Rondinella & Croatina from vineyards reaching 40+ years of age, adding to the quality and complexity of this wine.
Vineyards are positioned in the hilly region of Negrar in the “classico zone” in a cluster of small valleys, where vines, olives, and cherries thrive. The climate is perfect here, influenced by the mountains and nearby Lake Garda. The slight altitude (between 170 and 230 metres above sea level) also aids the cultivation of quality grapes.
In many ways this wine tastes and feel more akin to a Superiore even though there is no oak used, there is depth and structure with clearly defined very pure, dark fruit. It is ready to drink and enjoy right now but this is sure to develop nicely over the coming years. (drink between 2-6 years from vintage).
Aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and redcurrant envelop the palate with a hint of black pepper and walnut. The palate is medium bodied, soft with pure dark fruit flavours, violet and almond. The fine tannins are well integrated and balanced with the acidity.
This would be a lovely pairing for a rich pork ragu with a tomato-based sauce, steak tartar or a spinach souffle.
