Aptly named Chien as the producers believe that these wines really are “The Dog’s”….” and we must say we agree! A cracking wine from the Catalunya Nord, also known as the Roussillon, deep in southern France. A large region much overlooked and brimming with promise and potential which spans from the Mediterranean coastline from the French border with Spain to the region of Provence. Unique, interesting and amazing value for money, a beautiful example of the grape varieties native to this region.
The final blend of Chien Blanc changes from vintage to vintage but the 2019 is made up of 50% Grenache and 50% Colombard. Full of character, medium bodied with a slightly floral nose and a hint of minerality. Honeysuckle, peaches and herbs shine through supported by lovely texture, depth and weight from the Grenache blanc, while fresh citrus from the Colombard adds balance and a lift. A salivating mouth which is slightly saline with juicy pear notes. Soft, round and mouth-filling with a hint of spice on the finish.
Perfect with a joint of ham, rich pate or chicken and apricot tagine. We love this with a selection of foods from our local Lebanese deli – the flavour profile, weight and depth of the wine really stands up to the complexity of flavours in the dishes they create.
