Les Chiens, Catalans Rouge, Vin de France, France 2019

Aptly named Chien as the producers believe that these wines really are “The Dog’s”….” and we must say we agree! A cracking wine from the Roussillon, deep in southern France. A large region much overlooked and brimming with promise and potential which spans from the Mediterranean coastline from the French border with Spain to the region of Provence. This wine is a delightful red field blend, distinctively French and crafted from mostly Grenache and Carignan with other permitted red varieties blended in to add extra depth and complexity. The actual final blend changes from vintage to vintage but all of the varieties used are native to the region. The wine has gone through a traditional red wine fermentation in stainless steel without carbonic maceration and there is no oak treatment on the wine so all of the fresh primary fruit characteristics come straight from the grapes themselves.

Deep cherry red in colour with ruby highlights. Slightly smoky on the nose, the Grenache adds its trademark blackberry flavours and a hint of garrigue whilst the Carignan gives this vibrant colour, lovely tannins and fresh acidity. Cranberry, strawberry and raspberry are evident as well as subtle notes of flora such as rose petal and violets. Excellent length and soft tannins.

This wine would work well with cinnamon spiced dishes, berry-based sauces and smoked meats and would be an amazing choice for a lamb tagine.
