What I love about Rioja is the versatility and this is a gorgeous example of a younger style of Rioja. Being a Joven, this Rioja hasn’t been aged in oak, instead it was bottled immediately after fermentation and therefore the focus is all on the fruit.

The Pascual Larrieta winery is ran by a husband and wife team who are committed to the traditions of the Rioja wine region while using modern technology wherever they believe it will be beneficial to the quality of the juice. Their focus is on the purity of their wines, they aim for the natural conditions in the vineyards to be reflected in the glass and therefore clean, fresh winemaking is their approach using cultured yeasts and synthetic corks (to ensure the young wine remains in the best condition possible while in bottle).

Made from a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Viura, the winery is located at Samaniego which sits at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains at the heart of Rioja Alavesa. The winery has 15ha of vineyards with vines averaging 50 years old and benefiting from the marl soil which is perfect for the Tempralillo grape.

Cherry red in colour with bright notes of strawberry, cherry and a hint of violet. The wine shows a little spice, a good structure with balanced acidity and a fruit forward finish.

This is plenty light enough to enjoy without food but if you did want a food pairing then white meat and fish would be perfect here. Young Rioja is a really good match to roast turkey with all the trimmings or try with seared tuna steak.
