We are very proud to work with Smalltown and for our Barossa listing we could not have been associated with a more compelling producer. Smalltown is a joint venture between noted Barossa winemaker Rolf Binder and Cambridge-based wine merchant Noel Young. Both Rolf and Noel have a passion for Rhône varietals and this shines through in their wines which use fruit from 15 long-favoured sites in the premium northern Barossa, drawing on Rolf’s deep understanding of the area.
This Shiraz is sourced from the finest available vineyard sites across the premium Northern Barossa Valley. Aged for 11 months in a variety of oaks with around 35% being new. They don’t set the blades too close together during crushing so there is a fair bit of whole berry in the ferment which gives the wine generous fruit and soft tannins.
A compelling, dark and rich chocolatey beast. This is a classic Barossa Shiraz with intense savoury flavours of thick blackberry compote, black pepper and typical iron-rich beefy flavours. Not a hint of jam here, no sweetness, this is serious Shiraz with a balanced acidity, a touch of cocoa powder on the finish and tremendous length.
As the name implies, black is the key – anything chargrilled would be superb here, so think griddle pans and barbecues!
