Wishbone is playful label from the extremely talented producers at Smalltown Vineyards. Grapes are grown on 42 hectares of prime sandy loam in the Barossa Valley’s highly sought after Ebenezer District along with other vineyard sites in the Barossa and Eden Valleys to express this uniquely magical corner of the world. Winemakers Rolf Binder and Christa Deans craft superb expressions of the region in their small, hands-on winery in Tanunda.
This gorgeous blend is made up of 75% Shiraz, 15% Grenache, 7% Petite Syrah and 3% Carignan. The wine is partly tank fermented and partly aged in oak, with a small new oak component. The blend is put together to be a juicy drinkable red that has some depth and complexity often missing at this price point.
Warm plum and raspberry fruit on the nose is following by hints of rocky earth, spice and violets. Lovely and ripe, edging on full bodied with juicy plum, raspberry, black cherry and spice on the palate with a lick of creamy oak. It is a generous juicy mouthful with bags of fruit and spice and good acidity too, keeping it vibrant. Sensuous and lovely.
This blend is a versatile food pairing wine that works particularly well with dishes featuring Mediterranean spices including red pepper, sage, rosemary, and olives. Darker meats and exotic spices would also bring out the fruit notes in this wine. Try it with lamb shawarma, gyros or Asian five spice pork.
